Islendingadagurinn Celebrates 125 Years

Posted on

Manitoba's Year of Music celebration continues with another fantastic summer of festival this long weekend. This year marks the 125th anniversary for Islendingadagurinn or the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba, which celebrates Icelandic culture and heritage... and throws one heck of a party in Gimli.

Running August 1-4, the event -- the second oldest continuous ethnic festival in North America -- offers food, crafts, games, competitions, sport, and even a Viking village. It also offers music fans three nights and two days of live music. This year's lineup is a diverse bunch, from alt-country to indie pop to jazz-tinged Mexican prog rock, featuring a big local contingent.

Homegrown talent hitting Gimli stages includes ukulele-wielding singer/songwriter Brooke Palsson, pop songstress French Press, the afore-mentioned prog act The Mariachi Ghost, post punk band Pop Crimes, children's act Seanster and the Monsters, alt-country darlings The Bros. Landreth, chamber pop outfit Yes We Mystic, and more. Download a free tune from The Mariachi Ghost

Touring acts invading for the weekend include Reuben and the Dark, The Meligrove Band, Elliot Brood, Manitoba-born Lindy Vopnfjord, and Iceland's own Sin Fang

Check out the schedule of live music below (keep it handy for the weekend with a free download of our Manitoba Live concert-finding app) and check out the festival's website for a complete listing of festivities.
