BreakOut West weekend kicks off its annual celebration of independent music from Western Canada with an outdoor party at the gorgeous, historic Fort Gibraltar – and Winnipeg is invited.
Multiple award-winner and indie music darling Dan Mangan will take the stage for a very special performance, along with Vancouver punk duo PinkBrown, Winnipeg pop/folk faves Yes We Mystic, Saskatoon DJ and producer Factor, a poutine stand, and more.

Fort Gibraltar, 866 Rue Saint Joseph

The kickoff party is a signature event and the official opener for BreakOut West, which takes over Winnipeg October 2 to 5. Sean McManus, chair of the BreakOut West Host Committee, says the kickoff event befits Winnipeg’s style of celebrating.
“Winnipeg loves live music and loves to party outdoors. We’re also proud of our riverfront parks and our history. What better way to combine these elements by featuring great music at one of our city’s most scenic and interesting historic sites,” says McManus.
Vancouver-based Mangan is a two-time JUNO Award recipient, two-time Polaris Music Prize listed musician and songwriter, and a recipient of six Western Canadian Music Awards. He has released three full-length albums and, with the help of Jesse Zubot, scored Hector And The Search For Happiness, a feature film starring Simon Pegg. His primary project right now is known as DAN MANGAN + BLACKSMITH, making next month’s solo appearance a very hot ticket.
Mangan will be joined at Fort Gibraltar by Vancouver’s PinkBrown, aka Gordon Grdina and Kenton Loewen. The pair teases out heavy handed improv with sticks and guitar strings on debut EP, Two Fish, with an explosive live set. Winnipeg indie outfit Yes We Mystic will open the show with its brand of intense, string-laden pop. Saskatoon’s Factor will keep the party going.
A highlight of Manitoba's Year of Music, the annual BreakOut West – which travels around to a different western Canadian city each year – features an industry conference and two-night music festival with over 70 showcasing acts, and two awards shows. Mangan will also take the stage at BreakOut West’s pinnacle event, the Western Canadian Music Awards Gala, on October 5 at the Club Regent Event Centre. Tickets for the WCMAs are available through Ticketmaster.
