It seems like just yesterday, the JUNOS were taking over Winnipeg... but it's really been a whole year and now Canada's awards show is landing in Hamilton. Those making the trip have plenty of chances to catch some Manitoba music at the festivities, including two-day music fest JUNOfest, charity hockey game JUNOcup, Junior JUNOS kids show, the JUNO Songwriters' Circle, and the big ticket itself, JUNO Awards telecast.
Homegrown acts are up for several awards this year, including nine nominations for artists that currently call Manitoba home. Brandon-based throat singer Tanya Tagaq picked up two JUNO nods, including Alternative Album of the Year and Aboriginal Album of the Year. Roots singer/songwriter Del Barber landed his second JUNO nomination, this year for his latest acclaimed release, Prairieography. Country blues outfit The Bros. Landreth earned its first JUNO for the independently-released debut, Let It Lie. Music legend Fred Penner adds another nomination to his impressive career with a nod for Children's Album of the Year, along with fellow children's act LuLu et le Matou. Steve Bell's 25th anniversary album, Pilgrimage, landed recoginition in the Recording Package of the Year category. Read more about this year's Manitoba nominees
