Music fans have a little extra something to look forward to this weekend. April 18 marks the eighth annual Record Store Day, which is celebrated around the world as a day to appreciate independently-owned record stores.

Because there’s a bunch of those great, independently owned record stores right here in Winnipeg, they’re going to help you celebrate by doing all sorts of things like bringing in exclusive RSD releases and collectibles, having goodies like donuts and licorice, and not to mention the sales. This year, there are seven participating stores around Winnipeg and a huge local release party.

NLC2 is hosting its Octuple Release Party at The Pink Room. Bands playing and releasing albums at the event include À La Mode, Johnny Sizzle, and more.

Other stops with some live tunes include The Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store, which will have F.C. Coconut spinning all day, and Into the Music, with DJ Kinetik and Birdapres on turtable duties between 10:30 am and 6:00 pm.

Pretty much every participating store has some sort of discount, and they will all have a bunch of records that are special to Record Store Day, so prepare to get up bright and early and visit your favourite local record shop.
