Manitoba’s music is once again breaking ground at Canadian Music Week (CMW), one of Canada’s biggest music industry festivals, May 1-10 in Toronto. Ten homegrown acts are booked to play the festival, which offers them the chance to perform in front of and network with music fans, industry, and media from across Canada and the world.

The 33rd CMW features 1,000 showcasing bands at more than 60 live music venues in downtown Toronto. Manitoba’s lineup includes indie rockers Attica Riots and Naysa, electronic rock outfit The Revival, punk/pop duo Mobina Galore, hip hop heroes The Lytics, country singer/songwriter Ashley Robertson, '70s-inspired rock band Until Red, folk/indie rockers Finn, ambient pop act Load, and rock'n'rollers The Proud Sons.

The annual event encompasses not only the popular music festival, but also a conference, trade show, and multiple awards shows. This year, several Manitoba artists, music companies, and radio stations could pick up hardware at three separate awards events.

Nominations for the Independent Music Awards, better known as The Indies, are out and familiar award-winning Manitoba names are on the list. 2015 JUNO Award winner Tanya Tagaq is nominated for two categories, Artist of the Year and Female Artist of the Year. The Bros. Landreth, who also walked away with a JUNO award this year, are nominated for Folk/Roots Artist or Group of the Year along with fellow JUNO nominee Del Barber. Comeback Kid will also be back at CMW this year with a nomination for Punk/Hardcore Artist or Group of the Year. The hardware will be handed out on May 9.

The Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards, which honour pioneers and builders of the Canadian music industry, will be held on May 7. This year’s nominees include familiar names in Winnipeg’s radio and live music community: QX 104, CJOB 680, Burton Cummings Theatre, Pantages Playhouse Theatre, MTS Centre, and Club Regent Casino.
