The lineup features emerging young talent from Studio 393's programming, rappers The O.B., TWIO, and J23. Each artist has been turning heads in the local community at showcases and performances -- including September's Hip Hop Matters event -- and with streaming videos and tracks.
Studio 393 is a youth-led arts studio dedicated to connecting emerging artists with each other and with community organizations that will help them grow as individuals and artists in all areas of hip hop including dance, rap, visual art, and video. Youth who frequent the downtown area are encouraged to stop in to Studio 393, located in the Portage Place Shopping Centre Skywalk, and engage in activities designed to foster their creativity and promote expression. It is all part of a larger effort to capture the imaginations of youth in the downtown and focus their efforts on positive ways to grow and become an important part of the community.
New Music Night is an incubator for new bands in Manitoba's vibrant music scene. Featuring three local acts on the first Wednesday of every month at The Good Will, the concert series offers emerging performers from any genre an opportunity to get on stage, connect with fans and the local community, try out new material, and perfect their live show. New Music Night -- which got its start at Ozzy's before moving to The Good Will in in 2015 -- has been a jumping-off point for many developing acts that have gone on to national and international success, including JUNO Award-winning roots act The Bros. Landreth, pop/rock outfit Mise En Scene, pop band The Treble, hip hop crew Abstract Artform, and indie rockers Federal Lights.
"There is some truly incredible talent coming out of Studio 393's programs," says Manitoba Music's executive director, Sean McManus. "We were blown away by their performances at Synonym Art Consultation's Nuit Blanche event in October and jumped at the chance to collaborate on a New Music Night. We're thrilled to help get these inspired young artists on stage to further develop their careers and excited to make some new connections in Winnipeg's hip hop community."
