Indigenous Voices at Folk Alliance International Conference

The voices of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit peoples will have a strong presence at the Folk Alliance International (FAI) conference this month. FAI is a key professional development conference focused on folk, roots, multicultural, and world music in North America. The 31st annual event will take place in Montreal, hosted on the traditional and un-ceded territory of the Kanien'keh:ka of Kahnawà:ke, February 13-17.

The Indigenous Music Development Program at Manitoba Music will host two nights at this year’s Indigenous Voices Showcase, which features artists from across Canada and around the world, including JUNO winners Leela Gilday and Susan Aglukark; Western Canadian Music Award winner Celeigh CardinalIla Barker and Tracy Bone from Manitoba; Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura from Aotearoa NZ; Emily Wurramara from Eylandt in the Northern Territory of Australia; and many more.

The showcases are presented in partnership with the International Indigenous Music Summit, where the IMDP will also have a presence. Bringing together global Indigenous music industry, culture leaders, and artists to honour tradition and forge new paths forward. The Summit is organized and facilitated by Indigenous artist and community leader ShoShona Kish.The one-day summit is a gathering of Indigenous artists, knowledge keepers, and community builders, along with key invited allies to discuss the most important issues facing the Indigenous music community. This gathering coincides with the UN's declaration of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages and is being supported in part through funding by the Canada Council for the Arts.
