Six Manitoba Acts to Showcase at Massive American Music Fest, March 11-17
Six Manitoba-based bands are headed due south this month to brave the creative flurry of SXSW, North America’s largest music industry event, to build an international fan base and connect with major industry players.
Dreamy shoegazers Living Hour, powerful and personal singer/songwriter Taylor Janzen, roots powerhouse duo The Small Glories, and arty noise punk trio tunic will join other Western Canadian acts for the BreakOut West showcase at Austin's Bungalow, aka Canada House, on March 14.
Fresh from the packed showcase rooms of Folk Alliance International, this event is the latest in a series of partnered events between Manitoba Music, SaskMusic and MusicBC under the BreakOut West banner, bringing together bold music from Western Canada to expand the artists’ markets and business connections. Making opportunities for Canadian musicians to travel and perform in new regions fosters creative drive in Canada, showing musicians they can build a career on creativity.
All of this year's showcasing acts have built significant national and international activity recently, including label deals, overseas tours, major media coverage, and more.
SXSW's music festival is a key stop for new, developing, and established artists looking to reach new audiences and make critical business connections. In 2018, 161,000 people attended official music showcases on over 100 different music festival stages featuring 2,000 plus official performers from over 60 countries.
Bringing Manitoba music to new geographic areas and intensifying trade activity in existing markets is a key component of Manitoba Music's trade and business development activities. Through events like these, Manitoba Music is able to increase the level of awareness and connection between our province’s music industry and the broader national and international industry, which is vital to the career advancement of Manitoba artists and industry professionals.
Over the years, Manitoba Music has presented successful showcases at major music industry events throughout Canada, the U.S., England, and Germany, including The Great Escape, Reeperbahn Festival, Folk Alliance International, and more.
Manitoba Music's market development initiatives are funded by the Province of Manitoba, Manitoba Trade & Investment, and FACTOR through the financial support of the Government of Canada and Canada's private radio broadcasters.
