Freelance live audio & studio engineer / producer. Film sound - location & post production, including ADR, Foley, SFX, edit / mix & original music. MOSMA grad, UofW BA in Film, IATSE 856 Sound (& lighting / art) dept permit, IATSE 63 casual, casual sound tech at many local venues including Rec Room, Pyramid, Albert, The Toad and Bulldog. I was monitor mixer and managed patch/wireless at The Burton Cummings Theatre often in summer / fall 2023 when with Sound Art, and have been FOH / system tech there before (Lake/Iris). My most recent experience includes mixing monitors and managing patch, tech / artist changeovers at mainstage for Pride 2024, Canada Day at The Forks (Hill Stage moved above Fools & Horses) & Kilterpalooza w RedRover / Eventlight, theatre productions (w 16 wireless beltpacks) and jazz bands @ Westwood Collegiate, deck audio (70 mics) for Star Wars w the Wpg Symphony Orchestra & lobby/intermission sound for Carmen (MB Opera) and Carmina Burana / T'el: WIld Man of the Woods at Centennial Concert Hall (w IATSE 63). Managed patch at the Burt Block Party 2023 1st weekend (w Sound Art) & deployed and setup the the PA, patched and mixed the band and 6 drum circles at True North Arena (media output included) for Indigenous / Orange Shirt Day September 2023. I have experience on all the common mixing consoles, active and passive ("racks n stacks") PA systems / line arrays and corresponding amps, processors/crossovers. I can operate lights and video (learning Onyx and Resolume atm) and have access to gear (and/or people with gear) for nearly ANY sized event or production/recording.
I started recording things around the housewith my battery operated tape recorder and cheapo mic when I was 5 or 6 - capturing myself, my dog, my sister, music from the radio or record player - and making tapes for my dad who worked up in tower cranes, in other cities, most of most years. As a teenager, after moving to Arborg with my mom and sisters, music saved my life. After one uncomfortable session with a family friend who was trying to change/"country-fi" my song, I bought a Tascam 4 track and recorded about 20-25 of my own songs over 3-4 yrs, some with the band I drummed in, most on my own. I continued to write, write songs, try and make short films throughout my early adult life as I tried the corporate thing - for too long.. I can tell myself it was "artistic", but thats just a cope .) Only in the last few years have I circled back to fully embracing my creative whims, thought about doing "sound" for a career, for other people.. The more I learned, the more I realized how DEEP this rabbit hole goes and how this might actually be able to keep my attention for long enough to be a viable "career" lol.. Turns out it was the perfect fit and I feel like I've just been preparing my whole life to be an engineer / producer! Tho I recognize there is yet much to learn, I know that I have alot of raw talent that experience and guidance will only sharpen, and this work brings me deep joy - most of what I do these days does! I also speak fluent "artist", playing a few instruments and undrstanding the artist concerns / point of view when I tech for them. I've gotten alot of great feedback about the little details I take care of in advance to make the environment comfortable and condusive to great performances!
My Studio experience includes recording with Seventh String, Paige Drobot, Armed n Loaded & Mimi Vouk, as well as editing and mixing 3 songs for Mimi that I had mastered at Outta Town Sound w Jamie Sitar in January. Hopefully 1 or more will be released soon! I have also mixed the Foo Fighters tribute performance by The Coveralls - recorded live at The Park Theatre in Oct 2022 - from the multitracks provided by the band. I have experience with the patch / boards / preamps / outboard gear at No Fun Club and MOSMA studios as well as having visited Studio 23 to plan future sessions. I have relationships with a few smaller studio spaces and can help make a production plan that works for even the tightest budget. I'm still relatively new to doing this professionally, so I value experience and potential. As such, rate / fee is negotiatble, per project, as I hope that I do good enough work to be asked to do more in the future and/or that the project itself will be successful and lead to further work with said artist, including live/tour tech opportunities etc etc. I'm doing alright on the live side of things, so have some wiggle room to do work for reasons other than money alone, to pursue and make time for things I feel passionate about!
I am also setup at my place with a full editing / mixing suite to keep costs down - I can do everything here except tracking a full drumset or doing foley / adr "properly". Vocals might also be better recorded in a studio with a dry/silent booth, better mic selection etc.. I create music here in Ableton and record my "acoustic" stuff with Pro Tools easily and effectively. I can mix with confidence on my Genelec 8040b monitors (as well as HiFi Polk / Yamaha, Logitech & "cartest" for referencing). I have a few mics, guitars, bass, percussion instruments, an amp, a sequencer, several midi devices and a large selection of software synthesizers and amp simulations from a range of vendors. I have 4 preamps and 8 lines to record simultaneously, can do at least 3 spearate headphone mixes separate from the main mix, have Ableton 11 Suite and Pro Tools Studio, as well as Reaper if needed. In addition to editing and mixing, his is a great space to track "scratch"/demos, to work out accompaniment/arrangment etc. The studio room is air conditioned :)
If you want to record or have already started, if you need help mixing something you've recorded, if you would like to write/workshop some extra parts/layers to your tracks, if you require streaming/loudness compliance across multiple devices/platforms, if you need guidance with finding a mastering engineer, with releasing your music, if you have questions about ANY part of this I would be happy to chat with you and see if there's any way I can help and/or find you someone who can!
