Freddy and the Fire Nation’s music pushes the limits of genre synthesis, combining the backbeats and bass lines of hip hop, the lyricism of pop melodies, the sound design of electronica, and the complex harmony and rhythm of jazz fusion. the resulting cocktail is music that embraces the notion of the artist as someone who pulls from the past while pointing to the future (file beside: Snarky Puppy, Robert Glasper, Butcher Brown).
Fred Warner, the group’s founder, composer, and bassist, has walked through many musical spheres. Born into a family steeped in music education and performance, he started out early on classical violin and ran the gamut of youth orchestras and music festivals before delving into the prairie’s rich tradition of fiddle music. His post secondary education saw him studying classical trumpet at the University of Manitoba, where he internalized the complex harmony of wind ensemble repertoire. Following his graduation in 2020, however, he developed a health issue which prevented him from playing trumpet, thereby halting his career plans of professional trumpet performance. Faced with several months of lockdown and no way to hone his craft, Warner took up electric bass and began a period of intense practice and composition, turning away from classical music and towards modern jazz, which he had long been a fan of.
Once live music made its return, Warner brought together a group of like minded, forward thinking musicians to bring his vision to life. After playing several packed house shows, Freddy and the Fire Nation is working hard at their first official releases and is looking forward to continuing to wow audiences in Fall 2022!
