Singer-songwriter Tommy Douglas Keenan's songs have earned praise from critics for their emotional honesty, sweet melodies, and humour.
His first solo record, Romantic Fitness, came out in 2010. He co-produced the album with long-time collaborative partner Matt Peters (Royal Canoe), and high-school guitar buddy Dave Quanbury. The songs range from guilt-ridden sweetness to twangry alt-country to tear-jerking lullaby. In support of Romantic Fitness he toured Canada several times, both solo and with a band, sharing bills with such acts as Hey Rosetta!, Wax Mannequin, and John K. Samson.
Tom’s day job is acting. He works across the country on stage and screen, often singing, playing, and composing as a part of the deal. Recent credits include CBC’s Burden of Truth, Universal Cable’s Channel Zero, and Rosetta Media’s The Pinkertons.
Recently his primary music project has been Heavy Bell, a duo with Matt Peters. They started collaborating in 2009, writing two songs for Royal Canoe. Next came an album of songs for the Tom-Tom Theatre production of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale.
In December 2016 they co-wrote the music for the zone41/West End production of Am I Not King: The Last Concert of Richard II. This show featured Tom singing and acting in the lead role, and Royal Canoe playing the live music. It received several nominations, and took the award for Best New Work at the Winnipeg Theatre Awards.
In January 2018, Heavy Bell released a full-length album called By Grand Central Station, a song cycle with words adapted from the 1945 poetic novel By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, by Elizabeth Smart. The release was followed by a Canadian tour with an 8-piece ensemble.
In August 2018 he put out his first solo release since Romantic Fitness, the summer single In Love With a Lake. It is an easygoing tragic love song about a meteor crater. co-produced by Tom and Matt Peters, the record features members of Royal Canoe, the D-Rangers, and Begonia.
A new album is imminent, friends.
