About
This workshop will look the mysterious work of audio mastering. Noah Mintz will talk about the basic techniques of mastering, the options that engineers have in mastering, and what artists and producers can expect from the process. Noah will also talk about mastering for 5.1 surround sound, for the mp3 format, and for vinyl.
Audio mastering is an essential if mysterious element of the record-making process, and is the final step to getting your CD ready for manufacturing. Mastering is part science, part music, and part alchemy, and mastering engineers have highly trained ears and an intense understanding of their equipment. While mastering software and plug-ins are easily available to the home user, it is not advisable to take on this task by yourself. Mastering may have a reputation for being stressful and expensive, but the payoff is enormously satisfying.
Noah Mintz has been running Grandmasters boutique mastering studio since 1997. Grandmasters currently exists as a "studio within a studio" at Lacquer Channel. The Grandmasters philosophy has always been "less is more." With a strong emphasis on "vibe", Noah's sonic signature has been left of some of Canada's most successful indie and major label acts.
Noah has a sizeable discography which includes Broken Social Scene, Death From Above 1979, Marble Index, Danko Jones, The Rheostatics, The Dears, Len, Hayden and Stars.
