About

Music management can cover every aspect of an artist’s career, from the emerging and development stages, to the international touring artist. This panel of accomplished and innovative artist managers will discuss the current state of the music industry and how managers are helping their artists navigate the new opportunities and uncertainties. This workshop will address the different types of artist manager relationships and the panel will discuss how they work with their artist on creative and market development and developing multiple revenue streams.

The panel includes Rob Lanni of Coalition Entertainment Management (Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan), Ryhna Thompson, Envision Management (Kid Koala, Amon Tobin), Andres Mendoza, Cuto (Alex Cuba), and Trey Mills, Opening Day Entertainment Group (Canadian Brass, Xquiste, Sean Kelly). This workshop is sponsored by the Music Managers Forum Canada.

Rob Lanni is co-founder and co-president of Coalition Entertainment Management (along with partner Eric Lawrence). Their current management clients include Simple Plan (Atlantic), Our Lady Peace (Sony), Finger Eleven (Wind-up), The Waking Eyes (Coalition/Warner) and Inward Eye (J Records). A graduate of York University, Rob started managing artists in the mid ‘80s after working as tour manager for Canadian band Sheriff (EMI). Rob is the past chairman of the Music Managers Forum Canada.

A well-known and respected international artist manager, Ryhna Thompson has been based in Montreal and working in the music industry for the last 10 years. Working at first as a songwriter, recording and touring musician with the band Parkside Jones, Ryhna cut her teeth on the business side of the industry working with local concert promoters and booking agents in Montreal in the late 90’s. In 2002, Ryhna founded Envision Management and Production. Under this banner, she has been managing one-of-a-kind, international recording artists Kid Koala, Amon Tobin and more recently, production-duo Two Fingers and the collaborative Sevens Project. She serves as General Manager for the emerging professional event M for Montreal, as co-founder of the music production collective Moondata Productions, and on the board of directors for the Music Managers Forum Canada.

Andres Mendoza manages Alex Cuba and runs the music marketing company Cuto. A seasoned music and marketing veteran, Andres Mendoza was with EMI Music Canada for 10 years where he last held the position of Senior Director of Marketing. While at EMI, he handled marketing management of recordings by Coldplay, Corinne Bailey Rae, KT Tunstall, Joss Stone, Ben Harper, Manu Chao, Kate Bush, Sarah Brightman, Van Morrison, Bob Seger, Jesse Cook, Leahy, Pride Tiger, Shaye and many others. With Coldplay’s X&Y, Mendoza engineered the highest ever unit sales debut in EMI Music Canada’s history. He led EMI’s transformation from traditional advertising to digital marketing, executed the first ever google adwords campaign for music in Canada and struck multiple content deals with major interactive sites and portals. With a geek-like interest in new media, he also developed mobile, user generated content, viral and social networking initiatives for the promotion of downloads, ringtunes and CDs.

Trey Mills shares management duties for Nicole Honlness (MTV), Juno-nominated R&B group X-Quisite and the Grammy-nominated quintet Canadian Brass. But his credits range the musical spectrum. He has worked with multiple Grammy winner Dixon Van Winkle (Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra), produced Christmas hits (Zoë Bentley’s “Very Merry Christmas”, Canadian Brass), and lent his talent to the soundtracks of popular television shows like Soul Food, Degrassi: The Next Generation, and, football hooligans take note, The World Cup of Soccer. After a decade spent producing and writing numerous Top 40 or better BDS hits for other artists, Trey Mills gets back to his performance roots with his debut solo album, Athabasca (OP3 / Universal).

The Music Managers Forum Canada (The MMF Canada) is a non-profit organization operating under the umbrella organization, International Music Managers Forum (IMMF). The overall goal of the IMMF and its MMF chapters around the world is to raise the professional standards and profile of music managers and most importantly their artists. The MMF Canada focuses on three main principles: education through workshops and panels; providing networking platforms between music managers and other relative sectors in the music industry; and lobbying on behalf of its members on key issues that shape the future of music. With over 100 members nationally, the MMF Canada has grown to become a tool to unify music managers.
