About
The WSO’s 70th Anniversary is a big milestone. It’s extraordinary to think of all the performances, musicians, conductors, and guests that been part of the WSO’s story since 1948. All of the musical moments have woven together a legacy that’s uniquely Winnipeg. So, it’s time to party!
This June, we celebrate the WSO’s 70th Anniversary and pay homage to its rich history with a very special community concert. We will tie in elements from the upcoming season and significant works from the WSO’s past. As an added bonus, tickets are only $7!
We are also excited to honour 70 “Symphony Heroes” at this special concert who have made an impact on the WSO in the last 70 years – musicians, volunteers, community leaders, donors, partners, teachers and other members of the musical community.
The opening piece, Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger was performed by the WSO in the very first concert when the orchestra was founded. The closing piece, the Finale from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, will be played at the opening of the 70th season.
The first WSO concert conducted by Walter Kaufman took place in 1948, so we invite you to help us recreate that moment by dressing in 1940s outfits! Those who dress in vintage looks will be entered to win a pair of tickets to the upcoming season.
If you have special memories from the WSO’s past, we’d love to hear them! Please email us stories and photos to 70th@wso.mb.ca
