About
Genius Guest conductor José Luis Gomez, a graduate of the El Sistema program in Venezuela, guides us through the work of two musical giants. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 introduced a more personal style as the composer started to push the piano to its expressive limits. He didn’t bother completing the piano part for the premiere, simply playing the work from memory.
As the new conductor of the Düsseldorf orchestra, Schumann wanted to impress the proud Rhineland folk. His lovely Rhenish symphony was the result: a journey from imposing brass to bucolic waltzes to magnificent cathedral impressions. The concert opens with Schumann’s take on Manfred, the original Byronic hero.
Join us for a pre-concert chat on the Piano Nobile at 7:15 p.m. each night.
