About

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) brings the music of some of Hollywood’s greatest creations to the Concert Hall stage this Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Classic Movie Heroes and Villains!

From March 26-28, blockbuster favourites will be featured such as Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone (Williams); Robin Hood and Captain Blood (Korngold); and Ben Hur, Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia, The Pink Panther, The Way We Were, and Rocky (Arr: Tyzik).

Innovative pops conductor Jeff Tyzik returns, also bringing with him his own arrangements for the pieces from Gone With the Wind and James Bond. Tyzik, who held the position of WSO Principal Pops Conductor for three years, is recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages. He is now the Principle Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Oregon Symphony and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

An accomplished composer and arranger, he has written over 160 works for orchestra, some of which have been recorded by the London Symphony, Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops and Doc Severinsen/Royal Philharmonic. Tyzik produced a Grammy Award-winning album, The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen, Vol. 1 and released six of his own albums.

The WSO is proud to feature its Associate Concertmaster Karl Stobbe for the John Williams piece, Remembrance from Schindler’s List. Stobbe, who has been with the orchestra since 1996, is an active performer with a diverse collection of music, from large orchestral pieces to chamber music, concertos, and other solo repertoire. A dedicated violin teacher, he also enjoys building new violins and restoring old instruments.

The WSO performs the Pops concert, Classic Movie Heroes and Villains, on Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 at 8 pm and Sunday, March 28 at 2 pm at the Centennial Concert Hall. Tickets range from $18 to $75 and are available through the WSO box office at 949-3999, online at www.wso.ca or through Ticketmaster at 780-3333 or ticketmaster.ca.
