About
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor
Mahler: Symphony No. 4
Alexander Mickelthwate - conductor
Augustin Hadelich - violin
Valdine Anderson - soprano
WSO audiences and musicians resoundingly hailed Augustin Hadelich's performance of Barber’s Violin Concerto in February 2012, asking that we bring this young masterviolinist back as soon as possible.
Mendelssohn’s eternally sweet-tempered Violin Concerto is one of the most popular violin concertos of all. From the passionate force of its opening through the rapturous melancholy of the second and athletic virtuosity of the finale, this concerto is one of the jewels of the literature.
Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is his most compact symphony, with music that is both touching and cheerful. Its last movement is based on a Wunderhorn song "Heavenly Life" and imagines a child's view of heaven. Wide-eye innocence and wonder are found in the opening movement too, enhanced by sleigh bells and delicate themes. A solo violin tuned up a tone gives a sinister tang to the dance-like second movement. The third movement's passionate intensity is also seen through a child's eyes, giving way to the radiant solo voice to close.
"Hadelich played the solo part [Mendelssohn Violin Concerto] with complete mastery, a creamy tone and grand expression. The audience was visibly moved by this committed violinist." – Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times
