 O HAPPY DAY! – A CELEBRATION OF SUMMER

Join the 50 voices of World Village Gospel Choir (WVGC) as they celebrate summer with a concert entitled O Happy Day!, featuring the famous song of the same name. The concert is Friday July 17th at 7:30 p.m. at historic Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton St. in downtown Winnipeg.

Tickets to O Happy Day! are $10 in advance and $15 at the door 45 minutes before showtime. Kids 12 and under are free. For more information please email worldvillagegospelchoir@gmail.com 

Fresh from a performance of a new worldbeat version of O Canada for Lieutenant-Governor Janice Filmon’s first Canada Day at the official ceremonies at Assiniboine Park, World Village Gospel Choir’s dynamic musical choices, tight harmonies and global music reach have captivated and inspired Winnipeg audiences since the Choir’s inception in September 2012.

It’s been an eventful spring for WVCG. In June, WVCG again performed at Aboriginal Day Live at The Forks’ Scotiabank Stage, broadcast live on APTN. The featured song was Drowning, written by Shayne and Taylor Mays, two young Indigenous women from a reserve on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, and produced by Ashley Buchholz, who discovered the duo while on an Artist in the Schools tour. The Choir was honoured to support these young women on their first live television performance. Here’s the video of their song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHlk36RyBccMore recently, WVGC was invited to sing their worldbeat-inspired version of O Canada at the official Canada Day ceremonies at Assiniboine Park, with Mayor Brian Bowman, Premier Greg Selinger and Lt. Governor Janice Filmon looking on. In May the Choir was notified that it had received funding from FACTOR, the national body supporting recording of Canadian music. In October WVGC will be going into studio to record an original gospel tune by Co-Director Neil Weisensel.

In their brief history, the Choir has backed up Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame group Heart at the MTS Centre, been featured in a Vision TV documentary entitled Gospel to Go,  twice performed live on a national APTN broadcast for Aboriginal Day Live, and sang at Winnipeg’s multicultural touchstone Folklorama at the invitation of ACOMI, African Communities of Manitoba Inc.

For this concert, the Choir again has outstanding soloists, led by WVGC Co-Director Rachel Landrecht and including smooth R&B singer Flo, jazz singer Lianne Fournier, Indigenous performer Mary Black who will perform the song “Drowning”, plus soulful percussionist Henry Zacharias. Add to that a top-notch band of some of the best Winnipeg musicians including bassist Malcolm Scholfield, drummer Anthony Giancola, guitarist Jason Tuesday and Zimbabwean keyboardist Shammah Pirhi and you have a recipe for an outstanding musical evening.
