About

Shaw Street Collective: Portrait of the Grasslands Tour

A New Take on the Familiar

The Shaw Street Collective is pleased to announce an inaugural tour of the prairies to Quebec from September 29 to October 9, 2015. The concert features sacred, classical, improvised, and folk music to depict the beauty of the prairies as experienced during a two-week Artist Residency at the Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan.

The Shaw Street Collective will be performing on September 29th at 8pm at the Dragon Arts Collective (3C 91 Albert Street, Winnipeg, MB). A suggested donation of $10 is accepted at the door.

In September of 2015, the Collective was invited to Val Marie, Saskatchewan, to take part in an Artist Residency at the Grasslands National Park, with the support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture/Saskatchewan Lotteries. They took on a twoweek project aimed at residents and visitors and ultimately themselves, the outsiders experience the particular nature of the Prairies. They began with the hypothesis that it is possible to go beyond simply saying, “That is beautiful,” to asking, “What does the fact of beauty have to do with my everyday life?” The Collective took the results of this project and created a concert complete with images and video from the park.

The Shaw Street Collective started as a collaboration between roommates in Toronto with the aim of creating beautiful music as a direct fruit of friendship, but has grown to include guest artists from across Canada. Their musical style is a blend brought together by their unusual instrumentation of trumpet, trombone, percussion and cello. Members of the group have performed with acclaimed ensembles such as the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, National Academy Orchestra, the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa, Regina Symphony and Niagara Symphony.
