In 2006, a young documentary maker visited Cape Town, Africa where he met a record store owner who told him the story of Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer-songwriter whose two albums, released in the early 1970s, had sold next to no copies in the U.S., but sold hundreds of thousands of copies in apartheid South Africa. Rodriguez was more popular and influential than Elvis in the country and inspired a generation of anti-establishment songwriters.
For years rumours circulated that Rodriguez was dead. Apartheid censorship laws resulted in little information about him. In the late 1990s, a South African music journalist started digging and made an astonishing discovery – he was alive and had no idea of his fame.
