About

You may not be familiar with the new California based combo FORD MADOX FORD but if your musical roots go to any kind of respectable depth, you’re likely more familiar than you realize.

In the late ’70’s, Chip & Tony Kinman were the heart of The Dils, one of the first hardcore punk bands in the US as well as one of the most politically astute and musically tuneful. The Dils morphed into what most people consider to be the first alt-country band ever, RANK & FILE. (Alejandro Escovedo was a member for awhile and his replacement was none other than Junior Brown, with that combo playing the UofM in '83.) After R&F packed it in, the brothers formed a couple of other bands, Cowboy Nation (trading in traditional western music, who had a song covered by Mike Watt backed by Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl and a cast of grunge wonders) and Black Bird, who specialized in a weird, Suicide-influenced electronic noise thing. After an extended absence Chip Kinman has returned with a new, full tilt blues-rock combo. FDMDXFD have just released their first single (produced by big brother Tony) and are bringing their self-described “punk-rocked-blues” to Canada.

Sharing the bill is a band revered in their home base of Montreal since the mid ’80’s, but not heard from in these parts since playing the Folk Festival in 1991. Mack MacKenzie’s THREE O’CLOCK TRAIN were alt.country before anyone had ever thought of the term, especially here in Canada. Formed in Montreal, Quebec in 1984, Three O'Clock Train was initially described as "Dark Country" born of Film Noire and Punk Rock angst. In 1986 they released their debut E.P. "Wig Wam Beach" and followed that up with the critically acclaimed L.P. "Muscle In" in 1987. Signed to the same label as FDMDXFD, Porterhouse Records, the Train have just released an EP called “Train of Dreams”, where they update some great, scrappy punk influenced numbers with some polished modern production.
