Impressions of Paradise
The WSOs Music of the Impressionists festival opens with Claude Debussys La Mer - a landmark orchestral tone poem depicting the sea and contains some of the composers finest orchestrations. Frederick Delius composed The Walk to The Paradise Garden, which is a glowing example of how French impressionistic style spread to other lands.
Iberts charming saxophone concerto epitomizes the French style, and two works by Delius and Messiaen perfectly translate religious imagery into symphonic colour.
