Many of you know our beloved Kiyoko— perhaps you went to school or played basketball together, or maybe back in the day she served you your favourite falafel breakfast, or quite possibly she’s made you a cocktail, or you’ve shared space at one of our city’s queer events— she is a big presence in our community.

What some do not know is that Kiyoko has been hard of hearing since birth, and has since relied on hearing aids to go about her day to day life. In Manitoba, people under 18 receive funding to cover 80% of these costs, and are allotted new hearing aids every 4 years. This funding is provincially mandated, but stops when you turn 18. As an adult, you can apply for funding from the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, but due to their own limited budget and the large demand for assistive technology, said funding gets used up fast. From SMD’s website as of February 23, 2019: “Due to the overwhelming influx of applications to the Assistive Technology Support Program, effective immediately applications are no longer being accepted until further notice. Funding is limited and capacity has been reached.”

Kiyoko’s current hearing aids recently underwent repairs, but are on their last legs nonetheless. Hearing aids for moderate to severe hearing loss can cost up to $4000 per ear. Without this assistive technology, Kiyoko can hear very little. We want to be ready when her current pair inevitably defects, so that she can continue to go about her daily life without interruption.

So we figured, why not throw a party? Our goal is to cover some of the approximately $8000 required, and to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities. SMD does wonderful, important work; work which has been key to Kiyoko’s success in life thus far, and they, too, are in need of support.

On March 22nd at the Good Will Social Club, we will be hosting the party of a lifetime! Stef Johnson of Mise En Scene fame will be blessing us with a solo opening set, Andy_2_k will be our magical DJ, & rock powerhouse group Silence Kit will be bringing it home for us!
