Some of Canada's best and most innovative jazz artists will perform in Winnipeg for the exciting fifth season of the Canadian Jazz Concerts Series (CJC).

Presented by the Centre culturel franco-manitobain and produced by Jazz Winnipeg, the series features exceptional musicians from across the country and celebrates jazz as a truly free and creative art form.

Artistic Director Michelle Grégoire shares her vision.

"My mission with the CJC series has always been to support the development of jazz in whatever form it may be at the moment; to give a voice to musicians who deserve wider recognition; to encourage the development of the music here in Canada; and to offer a venue to make it happen," Grégoire said.

"Somewhere in there we may discover the next historic contributors or you may just hear some honest and passionate music making by people expressing themselves freely, and I must say, that is a beautiful thing - that is the true spirit of jazz."

The season starts on October 19th with the stylish, contemporary sound of the David Occhipinti Quartet. Occhipinti, a prolific composer and highly skilled guitarist, has been nominated for a Juno and a National Jazz Award. He is set to release his latest recording, Forty Revolutions, this fall.

Next up is energetic up-and-coming Vancouver artist, Jodi Proznick. The highly sought after bassist has played with a number of critically acclaimed groups and was the 2004 winner of the Galaxie Rising Star Award at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. The Jodi Proznick Quartet plays the Canadian Jazz Concerts series in November.

The Darren Sigesmund Quintet is slated to perform in February. The show will feature the sophisticated and imaginative original work of trombonist / composer Darren Sigesmund. The Toronto ensemble has toured throughout Canada, in Australia and Asia.

In March, the season finishes with Michael Herring's Vertigo featuring New York saxophonist David Binney. Herring is a bassist and composer and while his focus is jazz, his is equally at home performing in a variety of genres, including folk, reggae and performance art. His 2006 recording, Coniferous Revenge, was called one of the most exciting and interesting recordings of last year by the Toronto Star.

As part of an ongoing commitment to the jazz community, the Canadian Jazz Concerts will once again feature the TD Canada Trust Jazz Labs. Led by CJC artists, the TDCT Jazz Labs are a series of free workshops geared towards emerging jazz musicians. The workshops will cover a wide range of topics from repertoire to music technique to the business of being a touring artist. With the generous support of TD Canada Trust and other community partners, the Jazz Labs are free and open to the public. The sessions take place at 4:00 p.m. on each concert date.

Featuring artists from across the country, the Canadian Jazz Concerts have celebrated emerging and established jazz talent since 2002. Created by pianist and composer Michelle Grégoire, the series impresses the local and national jazz community as one of the premier jazz performance concert presentations in Canada. The Canadian Jazz Concerts series is presented by Centre culturel franco-manitobain and produced by Jazz Winnipeg.
