The Yellow Pelican myth manifested itself on a sailing race on Lake of the Woods the summer of 2003. Our boat leading the fleet, had to spot the finish line, a yellow marker somewhere in the vast Big Traverse Bay. Convinced we could see the marker bobbing on the horizon far in the distance, we stubbornly pursued our course until it was obvious that we were not getting any closer, and the fleet was heading in another direction. We altered our course and managed to salvage the race, but not by much. It must have been the Yellow Pelican, an ubiquitous feathered jester mischievously misleading us until we finally realized our perceived goal was an illusion.
