Manitoba-born, Stratford-based singer and composer Loreena McKennitt is to be awarded an honorary degree by Wilfrid Laurier University at Waterloo, Ontario during the university's fall convocation ceremony on December 1.

"In addition to her successful music career, Loreena McKennitt's entrepreneurial accomplishments as well as her community leadership initiatives form the basis for her nomination," said WLU president and vice-chancellor Robert G. Rosehart.

With six full-length studio albums and a two-disc live recording to her credit, McKennitt has sold nearly 14 million records around the world on her own Quinlan Road label. An October performance for the Queen and Prince Philip on the grounds of the Provincial Legislature in Winnipeg - part of the Royal Family's Jubilee tour of Canada - underscored McKennitt's position as one of Canada's most prominent recording artists.

In addition to her musical accomplishments, McKennitt has initiated and led a number of important charitable and community projects. Among them are The Cook-Rees Memorial Fund For Water Search and Safety, The Falstaff Family Centre and Stratfords new cultural hub, the Discovery Centre.
