Manitoba-Based Acts Up for Awards in Indigenous, Metal, and Roots Categories

Manitoba artists are strong contenders for top honours at the 2019 JUNO Awards. Homegrown acts are up for several awards, including three nominations for artists that currently call Manitoba home. The nominees for the 48th annual awards were announced by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) on January 26. Canada’s music awards are headed to London, ON for JUNO Week, March 11-17, 2019.

Anishinaabe MC/singer/songwriter Leonard Sumner has landed his first JUNO nomination with a nod for Indigenous Music Album of the Year for his album, Standing in the Light

Metal + hardcore-infused noise rock outfit KEN mode has picked up its fourth JUNO nomination for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year its latest recording, Loved. The trio won in 2012 for Venerable.

Roots trio The Wailin’ Jennys has landed a JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year for its album, Fifteen. This is the band’s fourth JUNO nod, winning awards in 2012 and 2005 for Bright Morning Stars and 40 Days, respectively.

Former Brandonite James Ehnes picked up his 27th JUNO nomination (he’s won 11) for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble for his recent work with the Seattle Symphony and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Winnipeg-born composer Nicole Lizée is up for her second Classical Composition of the Year. Tim Neufeld, who is now based in Abbotsford, picked up his fifth nod for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year. Former Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra composer in residence (2007-2014) Vincent Ho, born in Ottawa and now based in Calgary, is also up for Classical Composition of the Year.

Winners will be announced at the exclusive JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards on March 16 and the 2019 JUNO Awards broadcast on CBC on March 17.
