DEADLINE: Thursday July 29 at 11:59PM CST

Manitoba Music is excited to launch a new edition of the annual Canadian Songwriter Challenge focused on emerging hip hop and R&B music creators! This is an opportunity to take your creativity to the next level through collaboration, connection, and networking.

Six songwriters/artists and three producers/beatmakers working in hip hop and/or R&B will be selected by a committee of industry professionals to participate in this creative development challenge. Running September 9-29 in Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg, the three week program will include co-writing with peers, and mentor sessions with industry professionals in songwriting, production, publishing, radio, music supervision, and A&R. This opportunity is ideal for artists interested in collaborating with others and gaining experience writing or producing for other artists.

Participants will have the opportunity to have their tracks heard and be mentored by:

DijahSB, Rapper
Jasmine Flott, Music Supervisor
Jay Devonish, Director of A&R Marketing / eOne Music
Junia-T, Producer/artist
Liz Rodrigues, Songwriter
Michael Asante, SOCAN
Mike Jansen, Sync Agent /The Greater Goods
Simone Torres, Vocal Producer & Engineer
Vivian Barclay, GM, Warner Chappell Music Canada

The hybrid program will be held in-person and over Zoom. Participants will meet online to receive a songwriting challenge, take part in music business discussions, and meet with the mentors. Artists will collaborate in groups of three on a song relevant to the brief, with support from the mentors. They will spend one day in a professional studio to record the song before sharing the finished tracks and receiving feedback from the mentors. There are three challenges with a new songwriting brief, and new collaborative groups for each.

This event is part of a national project, the Bell Media Canadian Songwriter Challenge. As a multi-year partnership between the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA) and Bell Media, the CCMIA's member music industry associations will be organizing songwriter-focused events across the country.
