SWMM Pro Songwriting Room Sessions

Deadline: Wednesday, September 6 at 10 AM

Great songs are the fuel of the music industry. Well-written and engaging songs are often created by a cohort of talented writers working together in a professional writing room, sometimes right after meeting for the first time. Collaboration, flexibility, and patience can be as important to creating a great song as hitting the right notes at the right time.

We’re bringing that experience to this year’s edition of SWMM! Professional songwriter and musical artist Kayleigh Katherine Ann O'Connor, aka Blue in Tokio, will lead participants through an authentic professional songwriting room experience. You’ll learn some of the techniques and skills that help pro songwriters succeed in almost any songwriting environment and maybe even find that extra “something” you’ve been looking to add to your songs.

Our mentor is experienced in working with a wide range of musical acts and this opportunity is open to all genres and performers (solo, group, band, etc.).

  • Participants must be Manitoba Music members and registered for SWMM
  • Songwriting sessions will take place in person at the West End Cultural Centre
  • Participants must be available for sessions during the day on September 14 and 15
  • Participants should be comfortable both receiving instruction and performing in public
  • Applicants will be adjudicated by a committee of industry professionals
  • Successful applicants will be contacted by email on Friday, September 8

SWMM Demo Listening Session

Deadline: Thursday, September 7 at 10 AM

Want to get your demo in front of music industry decision-makers and professional creators? Manitoba Music is now taking submissions for the Sound Waves Music Meeting (SWMM) Demo Listening Session on September 16. Participants will listen to their own music alongside industry experts, learn what the pros listen for when hearing new demos, and be part of the discussion about what makes a strong first impression and why.

This session will feature a panel with reps working in artist management, A&R, publishing sync, and professional songwriting, who’ll offer live feedback.

We encourage folks to submit unreleased demos as some feedback may challenge them to make some important changes. Previously released songs will be considered, but priority will be given to unreleased material.

Music of all genres is welcome but space is limited. It is not necessary to bring a song to attend and hear what the panelists have to say. This demo listening session is open to all artists but priority will be given to Manitoba Music members.

This is an open listening session all SWMM participants are welcome to join the audience.

Panelists:

Everton Lewis Jr., Wracket Music (Music Supervisor)
Dougie Bohay, YMU Group (Manager of Steve Aoki, YMU Group Partner)
Kayleigh Katherine Ann O'Connor, Blue in Tokio (Professional Songwriter)

To be considered for this opportunity, you must:

  • Be a Manitoba-based artist
  • Be registered for SWMM
  • Be willing to share your music in a large-group setting and be open to feedback
  • Be available to participate in the session (September 14-16, exact date and time TBC)

To apply:

Fill out the form and email your unreleased song to alex@manitobamusic.com

Only one song per artist will be accepted.
