About

This year, the Winnipeg New Music Festival will continue exploring the boundaries of pop with a second year of its grittier late night sub-sect, Pop Nuit. Ever since the Beatles threw in the towel on Love Me Do and started recording their guitars backwards pop music has played a major role in the progression of pushing the boundaries of conventional composition. Winnipeg can look forward to a stellar line up of musicians from all over Canada doing exactly that.

The sub-festival will be headlined by Polaris short-listed circular-breathing saxophonist Colin Stetson. Stetson’s unique take on his instrument has been impressing pop music’s forward thinking crowd since 2011 and this will be one of his first performances in Winnipeg. Opening that night will be Hannah Epperson of Vancouver, a violinist whose haunting beautiful looping tones promise to mesmerize. In addition to this headlining show, Pop Nuit will be hosting hometown secret Venetian Snares. Aaron Funk, the sole member of Venetian Snares, has been prolific in the electronic music scene for over a decade, sometimes releasing as many as eight albums a year. His manic clusters of samples, drum beats and synthesizers will attack your ears… in a good way. Opening the evening is local legends Mahogany Frog. Their unorthodox sounds and complex arrangements explore the nether regions of tone, mood and composition.

Tickets for Pop Nuit are $20 at the door, but only $15 in advance. And if you are planning on seeing all the NMF events, you can add both Pop Nuit events to your NMF Pass for only $25!
