About

Presented by Times Change(d) at Blue Note Park Aug 13-15, 3021, “Culture Not Condos: Concerts For Equitable Communities” is an idea and an event borne out of physical necessity, a need to adapt to urban development, a chance to see change as opportunity rather than loss.

The Fortune and Macdonald restoration/revitalization project at the corner of Main St and St Mary Ave in downtown Winnipeg presented challenges not only from architectural and engineering perspectives, but also from a cultural standpoint. Saving a small music venue, respectfully celebrating the history of city founders, and ensuring continuity of affordable housing were at the forefront of developer concerns.

While the renovation and success of the Times Change(d) was secured as a result of the Fortune and Macdonald project, the intense challenges presented by COVID-19 have found the club moving outdoors to continue supporting Winnipeg musicians. And as we have reimagined our venue, we have become acutely aware of the vulnerability of shelter, and the need to help raise awareness about others whose plight and profile are less visible.

In what will become an annual event format, Culture Not Condos will select an empty lot each summer to bring to life as a concert site, creating a “pop-up” opportunity to see urban development in an artistic sense and to shine a spotlight on equitable initiatives for uplifting communities, nurturing neighborhoods, creating  affordable housing, and offering arts for all.

Our first event takes place at 220 Main St,  in support of Home First Winnipeg, a non-profit created by the Pollard family to provide safe, quality, affordable housing for Winnipeg’s homeless population. Home First Winnipeg will develop and construct a three-storey, 47 micro-suite apartment building, complete with wrap-around health support for residents. The Pollard Foundation is donating $3.9 million towards the $8-million project. Funds raised through Culture Not Condos 2021 will be donated to the project as well.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of FACTOR and the Government of Canada for their support of this event.
