About

Tresor EzoMan and the Namwira Folks Band (winners of the WECC/ Le 100 Nons prize at the Decouvertes Manitobaines in June 2013) blend hip-hop culture with commentary on society and the world around us – April 11th at the West End Cultural Centre.

Congo (D.R.) born musician and performer now living in Manitoba Tresor Namwira AKA “Ezo Man” is comfortable on the stage as a solo performer as well as being a founding member of the Winnipeg group, Namwira Folks Band. Tresor considers the Namwira Folks Band “to be an educational and cultural organization that considers music its essential component. Namwira Folks’ vision is to promote education and to showcase music, multiculturalism, and especially to promote young talent in the field of music production and artistic development in Manitoba.”

Tresor grew up in a musical household in a small village named Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His father would play French classical music on the guitar, his mother would often sing Christian songs while at home. “Interestingly, as my parents usually tell me, I would start singing along without them asking me to.” Tresor would eventually join his local church and school choir and solo performances soon followed. “I realized that music is not something ordinary to me. It was, in fact, extraordinary to me. I discovered that music was my passion, the best way of expressing my creativity”. Though there was music in the house, life was not easy for Tresor. Insecurity, war, atrocity and no hope for employment lead his family to move to the capital city of Kinsasha.  In 2011, a dream for Tresor’s family was realized as the family was granted permanent residence in Canada and eventually moved to call Winnipeg home.

Around the age of 16, Tresor began listening primarily to French rap/hip-hop which guided his own artistic direction. A year later Tresor would begin to write his own original music inspired by the rhymes and poetic flow of French rap which formed his first album Nouveau Monde Nouvelles Perspectives.

Tresor’s muse is his life experiences and his greatest wish of seeing the word as a better place to live in than it is today. “I have a strong desire to promote multiculturalism and human rights through my music, promoting “harmony in diversity”. My music tackles topics about realities that have been affecting our society for ages, including drug use and bullying. My goal is to inspire the public and, especially, to let people with biases know that hip-hop music is not necessarily a misleading style. I want to portray the idea that hip-hop can be utilized to promote positive change.”
