Folk Fest Announces 2009 Performers

The ice is melting, the birds are chirping, but the surest sign of spring in Manitoba? The Winnipeg Folk Festival has announced it's 2009 line-up.

This year's fest will include a handful of locals, including Don Amero, Alana Levandoski, Dust Poets, Big Dave McLean, and kid's acts Mr. Mark and Puppet Folk. There are also plenty of big names set to grace at least the main stage: Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Arlo Guthrie.

The line-up also includes  a veritable who's who of the the CBC Radio 3 playlist: Gentleman Reg, Belle Orchestre, Amelia Curran, The Deep Dark Woods, T.Nile, and Great Lake Swimmers.

The band I've been waiting for years to watch live? Texas' Okkervil River.

I'm sure there will be the inevitable discussion about how acts like Patrick Watson fit into the definition of "folk music." Personally, I've given up on the idea of "folk" as an exclusive genre. All I know is that this is the most exciting line-up I've seen in years.
