Manitoba at SXSW: Local Acts to Showcase at Massive Austin Music Fest

Posted on

When Austin turns itself over to South by Southwest this month, Manitoba will be there in force. Nine local acts are set to showcase and network at the massive Austin music fest, which runs March 13-18. Now in its 24th year, the prestigious festival will put some of Manitoba’s most exciting and innovative acts on stage in front of powerful international music industry professionals.

SXSW is one of the world’s biggest music festivals and conferences, featuring over 1300 acts from across the globe performing in every imaginable genre. Manitoba acts will have the opportunity to perform for some of the industry's top names as well as rabid audiences in several Austin venues.

Manitoba Music will be back in Austin to host top talent from the keystone province on March 15 at Maggie Mae’s Gibson Room. The line-up features the return of breakout soul/pop duo Imaginary Cities, indie outfits Royal Canoe and Les Jupes, award-winning roots/soul quintet Chic Gamine, and up-and-coming pop/rock duo Cannon Bros.

This show is the latest in Manitoba Music’s series of successful market development events highlighting homegrown talent, including recent industry showcases in Toronto, New York, and Cannes, France.

Other Manitoba acts hitting the stage during SXSW include 2012 JUNO Award-nominated noisecore act KEN Mode, who have a coveted spot on the Pitchfork showcase, and hardcore road warriors Comeback Kid. Roots rocker Romi Mayes will also get in on the fun with Austin shows during the week.

Over the years, Manitoba Music has presented successful showcases and events at Reeperbahn, MIDEM, Musexpo, North by Northeast, International Folk Alliance, Canadian Music Week, and last year’s packed show at SXSW. These showcases are an initiative of Manitoba Music’s Market Development Program, which is funded by the Government of Canada and Province of Manitoba through the Canada-Manitoba Economic Partnership Agreement, and by FACTOR with the support of the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage (Canada Music Fund) and of Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters.
