Bands Vs. Filmmakers Returns to the WECC for a Third Round
For the third year, the West End Cultural Centre will host the ultimate showdown between artists: Bands Vs. Filmmakers. (That was meant to be read in a super dramatic announcer voice...)
The annual fundraiser for Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque features four local independent filmmakers presenting their film and video work live to accompany performances by five independent bands. Each artist will work individually with a particular band to create an visual and musical experience for the audience, which will be simultaneously screened behind each band’s performance.
Bands taking the stage this year include Mariachi Ghost, Mahogany Frog, Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers, and The JD Edwards Band. Slattern, which features This Hisses' Julia Ryckman, will also be on stage for a special performance of highlights from early German animated 1920s classic, The Adventures of Prince Achmed.
The lineup of independent filmmakers includes recent University of Winnipeg Student Film Festival award winner Ian Bawa; acclaimed illustrator and filmmaker Leslie Supnet; filmmaker and musician Doreen Girard, a founding member of the Bent Light and Negative Space artist’s collectives; animator, filmmaker, photographer, and writer Nick Friesen, who has made videos for the likes of Greg MacPherson and Federal Lights; and Lotte Reinger, creator of the German animated classic.
A silent auction of fabulous prizes includes a completely re-mastered 7 DVD box set of animation pioneer Norman McLaren including rare unfinished films and cult film posters. You’ll also find Winnipeg Folk Fest passes, Jazz Winnipeg Festival tickets, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre passes, Royal Winnipeg Ballet tickets to Handmaids Tale, a signed Handmaids Tale book and more!
Hosted by Ace Burpee, the event will also feature a silent auction, including a completely remastered seven DVD box set of animation pioneer Norman McLaren, passes from the Winnipeg Folk Festival and Winnipeg Jazz Festival, and more.
