Brandon-born James Ehnes has made a name for himself on the international classical circuit as a virtuosic violinist. His catalogue of work, which includes over 30 recordings, has received many prestigious awards, such as a Grammy Award, a Gramophone Classical Music Award (also referred to as the Oscar’s of classical music) and seven JUNO Awards. In 2010, Ehnes became a member of the Order of Canada, and in 2013 he was named an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, which is limited to 300 living distinguished musicians. He has performed all over the world with some of the most venerated orchestras and conductors, and this year, he’s up for two more JUNOAwards (whatever, no big deal).

What song would you like played at your funeral?
The third of Strauss' Four Last Songs, "Beim Schlafengehen"

What was the first tape, vinyl, or CD you bought?
As far as things purchased with my own money, Vladimir Ashkenazy with Georg Solti and Chicago Symphony, Beethoven piano concertos. Vinyl. 

Favourite Old Dutch flavour?
Just plain old regular. Sometimes Bar-B-Q. Or Dill Pickle if I want to freak out my American friends.

Was there a concert that changed your life and how?
Going to Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concerts as a kid. I can't pick out a specific one – they were all inspiring to me.

If you could sing a duet with anyone (living or dead), who would it be?
I wouldn't subject anyone to that, living or dead.
