Bobby J Hobson
Bobby J has had an illustrious career as a beloved and popular singer/songwriter, prolific percussionist and gifted drummer. He has performed with popular bands in St. Kitts, Winnipeg MB and Edmonton, AB, Canada.
Born Robert James Hobson, Bobby J, as he is popularly known, was born in Aruba, NA and grew up in St.Kitts/Nevis in the Caribbean. Bobby migrated to Winnipeg, MB in 1974 and since then his contribution to music has spanned several decades.
Bobby J started off as a percussionist on the island of SKB (St.Kitts) , later became the original drummer and one of the lead singers for the famous Ellie Matt and the GI's Brass out of St.Kitts.
On arrival to Winnipeg in 1974, Bobby J, played drums with a local Winnipeg band called Bridge, in 1975 he joined the very popular 60's-70's Caraballo Band as the drummer and lead singer, performing at most of the major hotels and the Caribbean Pavilion at Folklorama each year. In 1979, Bobby was transferred to Edmonton , played with some local bands, then later established his own popular dance band called Code 7 which was comprised of Canadian and Caribbean nationals.The band released an album entitled, Just A Little More Time, for which Bobby wrote most of the songs. Bobby returned back to Winnipeg with his job as a Customs Broker in 1986 and in 2012, formed The Kaya tribute to Bob Marley band, performing for years at the yearly Soca Reggae Festival, held at Market Square.
Presently, Bobby J continues play, write and produce his own music, releasing a few albums and such singles as a remake of the late Sugar Minot/Michael Jackson song, “We've Got A Good Thing Going”- which was recorded, mixed by Jim Stoeber at Tegancat Music in Winnipeg.
Bobby J's company, Rhythm Of The Beat Music, over the past few years has released several singles, Jah Love, What The World Needs Now and his latest release, I Believe Tomorrow Will Be A Better Day, which are available on all Platforms including YouTube.
In the summer of 2021, Bobby was cast as a background and one of the Porters in the joint CBC/BET drama series called The Porter which is currently streaming on CBC Gem.
Bobby J is currently active in his studio, writing and producing new music and will soon be returning as the drummer and backup singer for the popular, Kim Reimer country rock band , here in Winnipeg.
