Cinematic power pop with soul. Paper Machetes cuts through the noise with bittersweet authenticity. Piano-driven, psychedelic songwriting mixed with powerhouse vocals promises audiences a dynamic live show that touches on all emotions of the human spirit.
Paper Machetes is led by Christy Taronno who has been an enigmatic songwriting presence in Manitoba for ten years, with her songs and performances having been featured in both theatre and film.
The band was formed by Taronno and drummer Danny Nguyen as a heavier take on pop, styled after melancholy powerhouses like Fiona Apple, with a twist of psych rock influences such as Radiohead and Grizzly Bear.
In Winter 2021 after a year of pandemic-distanced collaboration with acclaimed producer and film scorer Justin Delorme (recently named Variety and Whistler Film Fest's 10 Canadians to Watch) Paper Machetes released their debut EP, "Balancing Act." Delorme soon joined the band as guitarist, along with bassist Mario Lagasse of Efflo.
After this breakout, "Balancing Act" has been praised by Manitoba critics to be "well-crafted" and "melancholy," "like a caressing wind, [it will] sweep you into the air."
