Cinematic power pop with soul.
Paper Machetes is led by Christy Taronno who has been enigmatically contributing her songwriting to various projects for years. Her songs have been featured in theatre, television (Wynter 2018,) and film (CBC Short Doc - Exposed Nerves 2018, Ruthless Souls 2020.)
The band was formed by Taronno and drummer Danny Nguyen as a heavier take on pop, styled after melancholy powerhouses like Fiona Apple and Ben Folds Five.
In Winter 2021 after a year of distanced collaboration with producer and scorer Justin Delorme (recently named Variety and Whistler Film Fest's 10 Canadians to Watch) Paper Machetes released their debut EP, "Balancing Act." Delorme soon joined the band as guitarist, and bassist Mario Lagasse (of Efflo) joined shortly after.
'Balancing Act' features an earthy, modern vintage sound reminiscent of Lana Del Rey or Father John Misty. After this breakout, "Balancing Act" has been praised by Manitoba critics to be "well-crafted" and "melancholy," "like a caressing wind, [it will] sweep you into the air."
