Hip Hop Jazz R&B
Winnipeg-based artist Serge Paul Guenette crafts a sound rooted in alt-R&B, where moody guitars, deep bass, and smoky vocals meet the soul of hip-hop and the feel of live musicianship. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, and recording engineer, Serge fuses raw emotion with polished detail, creating music that lingers like a memory and moves like a heartbeat.
After graduating from PAVI Audio Engineering School in Vancouver, Serge founded Surging Sound Studio, his creative home and the base of his musical universe. There, he has built a reputation for capturing authenticity, blending analog warmth with modern minimalism and letting every breath and note carry emotional weight. His songs often sit in that late-night space between reflection and release, where vulnerability turns into rhythm.
Serge’s first major project was a collaboration with Dooms on Join Us, a rap-rock fusion that pushed genre boundaries and introduced him as a fearless experimenter. That project established his willingness to blend grit, melody, and emotional depth, laying the foundation for his future work.
Following this, Serge honed his live performance skills performing saxophone for Jeremie & The Delicious Hounds and Beatox, two acts known for their high-energy shows and soulful grooves. Those experiences shaped his sense of dynamics, melody, and the unspoken conversation between instruments, which remains a central part of his recording approach.
He then released Retrospective, a self-produced EP that revealed his introspective side, textured with smooth vocals, jazz-tinged progressions, and guitar tones that feel equal parts nostalgic and cinematic. It set the tone for his future releases: emotionally charged, musically intricate, and sonically spacious.
His most recent project, Rumination, deepens that sound. A dark, sensual exploration of solitude and self-awareness, the EP draws influence from artists like Two Feet and Labrinth while maintaining Serge’s signature touch, with intimate vocals layered over pulsing grooves and atmospheric guitars. It is a body of work that feels like both confession and release.
Serge has collaborated with Frost Gamble on several singles, including Stop Crying, So Infatuated, and most recently Nothing At All. These tracks blend bluesy melancholy with modern alt-R&B production, showcasing Serge’s ability to convey vulnerability and emotion while maintaining a compelling rhythmic and melodic sensibility. The partnership highlights Serge’s knack for storytelling through music, and his ongoing evolution as an artist.
Looking ahead, Serge’s forthcoming album Gut Love, set for release in winter 2026, promises to push his alt-R&B sound into deeper emotional territory, exploring love, loss, and the space between pain and beauty. The album reflects his continuing growth, combining introspective lyrics, lush instrumentation, and carefully crafted production to create a sound that is both intimate and cinematic.
For Serge Paul Guenette, music isn’t just crafted. It is felt, lived, and constantly in motion.
