Manitoba musicians will be trading biting windchill for hot live music and heading due south for massive Texas music fest South by Southwest (SXSW) next month. Several local acts are slated to perform at the festival and conference, which runs March 11-16 and features career-building showcases and key networking opportunities.

The Manitoba Showcase takes over Canada House on Austin’s famed 6th Street for a showcase featuring buzzed-about acts, including JUNO-nominated genre-bending pop outfit Royal Canoe, acclaimed singer/songwriter JP Hoe, in-your-face pop/rock pair Mise en Scene, and indie rock band Federal LightsThe Manitoba event creates an additional performance opportunity for artists with official SXSW showcases.

Manitoba Music will also co-host a showcase for SXSW Interactive and Film delegates on Tuesday afternoon at The Majestic. The Interactive stream has become by far the largest facet of the enormous international conference. Boasting a stellar lineup of talent from across the Canadian west under the BreakOut West banner, this show is the latest in a series of collaborations between music industry associations Manitoba Music, SaskMusic, Alberta Music, and MusicBC.

Other Manitoba acts playing in Austin during SXSW include hip hop act Grand Analog and singer/songwriter Scott Nolan.

Bringing Manitoba music to new geographic areas and finding new markets to intensify trade activity in existing markets is a key component of Manitoba Music's trade and business development project, which is funded by the Government of Canada through Western Economic Diversification Canada. Manitoba Music's market development initiatives are also funded by FACTOR and Manitoba Trade & Investment. Participants were able to access support through the Market Access Program, which is funded by the Province of Manitoba and Manitoba Film & Music.

Through events like these, Manitoba Music is able to increase the level of awareness and connection between our province’s music industry and the broader national and international industry, which is vital to the career advancement of Manitoba artists and industry professionals. Over the years, Manitoba Music has presented successful showcases throughout Canada, the U.S., England, and Germany, including at major music events like the Reeperbahn Festival, The Great Escape, North by Northeast, and more.
