The Lost Violin of Sherlock Holmes
By Dr. John H. Watson
It was on a dreary October evening that I returned from a late call upon a patient in Wimpole Street to find Holmes standing in the middle of our sitting room, a note in one hand and his beloved violin case conspicuously absent from its usual place by the fireplace.
"My dear Watson," he said, without turning his gaze from the paper, "the hour is grave. My Stradivarius has been stolen."
"Stolen? But how?" I exclaimed.
Holmes handed me the note. It was written in a slanted, delicate hand, the ink still fresh:
"Mr. Sherlock Holmes, your bow is sharp, but let us see if your strings are in tune. Find me before the last chord fades, or your music will be silenced forever."
No signature. Only a faint scent of sandalwood lingered on the paper...
