Record Number of Manitoba Artists Infiltrate Austin Music Fests
An unprecedented 14 Manitoba acts are heading to Texas to showcase at two major music festivals in March. Manitoba will have its strongest showing at the prestigious South by Southwest and RedGorilla Music Fest, which runs simultaneously in Austin, sending some of its most exciting acts to showcase in front of influential international music industry professionals.
Now in its 21st year, SXSW -- which runs March 18-21 -- is one of the world’s biggest music festivals and conferences, featuring over 1300 acts from across the globe performing in every imaginable genre. This year’s list of local showcasing acts includes alternative pop outfits Boats, M60, and The Details, as well as hip-hop act Grand Analog, Juno-nominated roots duo Twilight Hotel, blues rockers The Perpetrators, and rock act The Telepathic Butterflies. Manitoba acts will have the opportunity to perform for some of the industry's top names as well as rabid audiences in several Austin venues.
For the eleventh year, Manitoba Music and MANITOBA FILM & MUSIC joins forces with North by Northeast to present the hottest party at SXSW at the Caswell House -- a gorgeous mansion in Austin, where industry and artists gather to eat barbecue, play music, and schmooze. This year’s party features live performances by Boats and The Details as well as Toronto’s Bedouin Soundclash and Victoria’s Immaculate Machine. CBC Radio 3 with host Grant Lawrence will broadcast the Caswell House party live on Friday, March 20 at 5pm CST. Be sure to tune in and listen live at cbcradio3.com.
The fast-growing, three-year-old RedGorilla Music Fest, which focuses on promoting showcases to the general public, will feature six Manitoba acts at this year’s festivities. Showcasing bands include rock outfits Inward Eye, The Nods, The Morning After, singer/songwriter Katie Murphy, electro-rock act Tele, alt.popsters Blue Sky Addicts, and electronic pop act Oldfolks Home.
