Native America North Showcase in New York

Posted on

Three of Canada’s top Aboriginal recording artists are headed to New York City to showcase for industry at global performing arts marketplace and conference, APAP|NYC 2013. The showcase, dubbed Native America North, features roots, folk, and pop interpretations of Anishinabe, Mohawk, Inuit, and Métis culture at the National Museum of the American Indian on January 12. The project is made possible by a partnership between Manitoba Music through its Aboriginal Music Program and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Performers include multi-award-winning Manitoba-based singer/songwriter Don Amero, Toronto-based genre-bending indie act Digging Roots, and Montreal singer/songwriter Elisapie. The three artists come from diverse backgrounds and play diverse styles of music, yet all remain highly attuned to their heritage and communities. They show that Aboriginal artists have moved beyond the confines of niche markets and can hold their own on any festival stage, at any music club, or at any performing arts center. "First Nation, Inuit, and Métis artists are releasing a lot of really great music in Canada and we're excited to be working with the Canada Council for the Arts on a project that helps them access new markets," says Sara Stasiuk, Manitoba Music’s executive director. "APAP provides a great chance for these talented performers to connect with presenters from around the world and the support of the National Museum of the American Indian should help them make a big splash in New York City."

The showcase is part of the Aboriginal Music Program's market development initiatives, which promote Manitoba's wealth of Aboriginal talent on the national stage. Through events like these, Manitoba Music is able to increase the level of awareness and connectedness between our province’s music industry and the broader national and international industry, which is vital to the career advancement of Manitoba's Aboriginal artists and industry professionals.

The Aboriginal Music Program is made possible by the generous support of the Government of Canada, the Province of Manitoba, FACTOR, Manitoba Film & Music, and members of the music industry of Manitoba.
