From the album A Fairway Full of Miners
Featured track, available from January 31 to February 8
Don't let the title of this week's featured download fool you; it's not really getting "worst". At least not for Boats. The indie pop outfit is about to release its third full length, A Fairway Full of Miners, on U.S. label Kill Rock Stars (Deerhoof, Gossip, The Decemberists). Recorded by longtime collaborator Ryan McVeigh at Prairie Recording Studios and UMFM Studios and mixed by David Carswell (Destroyer, The New Pornographers), A Fairway Full of Miners follows up the band’s acclaimed 2010 release, Cannonballs, Cannonballs. Last month, Boats released its Marblemouth cassette (yes, cassette) that is currently sitting at the #10 spot on The National Top 50. You can pretty much spend your weekend reading all the recent features, blogs, and stories about Boats in Exclaim!, CBC Scene (plus CBC Scene), Songfreaks, The Projector, Quick Before It Melts, Turn The Record Over, The Manitoban, Vivoscene, Elbows, and many more. Coming up in March, Boats will hit the showcase stages of CMW in Toronto and SXSW in Austin. There's even a music video on the horizon. But before that, Boats releases its long-awaited CD for hometown audiences at the West End Cultural Centre on February 2. The band will be joined by The Random Band Spectacular: a dozen local musicians, three random bands, nine cover songs they've never played (see: Haddock & Ships, Weezer-Turner Enodrive, The Taliband). While you wait, flip through the internet and read about Boats while you download and listen to new song "Getting Worst". Yeah Boats! Click her for show details.
