"Saskatoon Berry Pie"
From the album Where in the World
Featured track, available from October 2 to October 10
Maybe you grew up listening to him. Maybe you watched him on television. Maybe now you're introducing your kids to his amazing catalog of music and remembering just how inspiring his songs are. Fred Penner is a legend.
He is a musical giant with numerous awards and accolades earned throughout his stellar career, including two JUNOS, the Order of Manitoba, and the Order of Canada. Penner has been an important figure on Manitoba's musical landscape for decades, from his early singer/songwriter days to heyday of Kornstock to the days when he brought joy and understanding to kids with acclaimed songs like "The Cat Came Back" and "The Polka Dot Pony". He has mentored many musicians along the way and continues to share his talent generously. He's continued to wow new audiences, popping up on Strombo and TEDx, and just last month, he landed a Canadian Folk Music Award for Children's Album of the Year for his latest release, Where in the World (distributed worldwide by True North Records).
On October 5, he'll be inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the Western Canadian Music Awards Gala in Winnipeg during BreakOut West. You'll have a few chances to catch Penner live during the #BOW2014 festivities, including a spot at the Pyramid on Saturday for the BOW Music Festival, a special performance at Mini BreakOut West on Sunday, and, of course the hall of fame celebration at the gala on Sunday night.
Don't for a second think that means he'll be resting on his laurels. Next up, Penner will head across the country for dates in Alberta and BC this fall. He'll also have a stop in Winnipeg on October 24 for David Suzuki's Blue Dot Tour. He'll reprise his role as Captain Hook in MTYP's production of Peter Pan, which runs November 27 to December 31. In December, you can look forward to the re-release of The Bump, illustrated by Barb Hicks.
We have an extra special treat for you this week, music fans. Mr. Penner's song "Saskatoon Berry Pie", off Where in the World, is this week's featured song. Gobble it up, get your tickets to the WCMA Gala and celebrate this incredible artist!
