ABOUT US

Manitoba Music (formerly MARIA) is the hub of Manitoba’s vibrant music community.
We are a member-based, not-for-profit industry association representing over 700 members in all facets of the music industry, including artists and bands, studios, agents, managers, songwriters, venues, promoters, producers, and beyond. Manitoba Music serves all genres, from rock to roots, hip-hop to hardcore, country to classical, and everything in between.

Through our programs and services, we provide information, education, communication, advocacy, industry development, and networking opportunities to nurture, develop and promote the growth and sustainability of the Manitoba music industry.

Manitoba Music has a state-of-the art resource centre, a website that overflows with mp3s and profiles, resources and news, a comprehensive series of industry-related workshops, a far-reaching market development program, and the only Aboriginal music program of its kind in the world.

SERVICES

Information
Members have access to a wealth of information pertaining to all aspects of the music industry locally, nationally and internationally. Manitoba Music staff is happy to answer questions and meet with members to discuss their work. The Manitoba Music Industry Resource Centre houses a library of foundational material, a definitive collection of Manitoba music, and subscriptions to all of the relevant trade publications.

Communication
Members receive regular emails, snail mail, and direct phone calls about a variety of topics, deadlines, opportunities and news in the industry. We also have an email-based discussion listserv, which serves as an ongoing opportunity for members to discuss anything with other members of the Manitoba music industry. Our website is an exciting tool to help promote our members and the Manitoba music scene to visitors from around the globe. Manitoba Music also publishes a quarterly newsletter as well as an annual Manitoba Music Industry Directory to keep our members and the public informed about the Manitoba music industry.

Education
Our Music Industry Resource Centre provides a wealth of resources from contact directories to books to on-line training modules for our members to become educated in any facet of music. Manitoba Music hosts large group workshops featuring industry pros from across Canada, informal discussions with successful local artists and industry professionals, as well as one-on-one training with our staff. We provide consultation on funding applications, assistance with press kit development, advice on career development, and many opportunities to learn about the business of music.

Advocacy & Representation
Manitoba Music is the voice of the Manitoba music industry in all communications with government and other stakeholders. We conduct industry research and gather data on the size, makeup, and economic growth of the industry.

Manitoba Music represents the Manitoba music industry in the following ways:
• Manitoba Music is the regional representative for the Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Record (FACTOR) and conducts juries on its behalf throughout the year
• Manitoba Music's Executive Director serves on FACTOR's National Advisory Board
• Manitoba Music conducts numerous joint initiatives with Manitoba Film & Music Development Corporation
• Manitoba Music is the regional representative of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences or CARAS (Juno Awards)
• Manitoba Music is a founding member of the Western Canadian Music Alliance, presenters of the Western Canadian Music Awards
• Manitoba Music is a founding member of the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA)

Industry Development
Manitoba Music promotes the Manitoba music scene at home and at major music conferences and festivals such as NXNE, SXSW, Canadian Music Week, New Music West, Western Canadian Music Awards, MIDEM, Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, Ontario Council of Folk Festivals, and Folk Alliance. Using CD samplers, marketing campaigns, and on-site promotional events, we showcase the Manitoba music scene to stakeholders and industry professionals around the world. We forge relationships between Manitoba's scene and the people who can help develop our musicians and our industry outside of our province. Through Manitoba Music's funding programs, we provide travel grants (Market Access Program), and financial assistance for business planning (Business Development Support Program).

Aboriginal Music Development
The Aboriginal Music Program (AMP) is designed to help Aboriginal people develop sustainable careers in Manitoba’s music industry. The program is a first for Canada’s music industry and has been in existence since April 1, 2004. It utilizes the organization’s established networks, resources and services as a foundation with which to provide additional support and profile for Aboriginal music industry workers in Manitoba.

Our goals:
• Raise the profile of Manitoba Aboriginal artists on a local, regional and national level through the creation of marketing materials and showcase opportunities;
• Empower Aboriginal artists to achieve their career objectives through greater exposure to players in the mainstream industry and the Aboriginal music sector;
• Strengthen Aboriginal artists’ understanding of the industry through targeted professional development opportunities tied directly to positive experiences at real music industry events;
• Create opportunities for senior and established Aboriginal artists to mentor emerging Aboriginal artists; and,
• Assist in the development new partnerships between Aboriginal artists, industry service providers, and development organizations.

Association Development
Manitoba Music assumes that a strong music industry requires a strong music industry association. This includes regular strategic planning, board development, and the adoption of best practices in the areas of human resources, financial management and member services. Manitoba Music endeavors to be a model association and provide exemplary services to our members.
