The sun is out and the Winnipeg Folk Festival is here, drawing thousands of music fans to Birds Hill Park for its 41st annual festivities. Beyond the workshops and concerts, the festival also runs specialized training, including the Galaxie Young Peformers Program (YPP). Open to emerging musicians age 14-24, YPP offers a day of workshops and mentoring with festival performers, including Chic Gamine, and a chance to perform on stage during the weekend. This year's list of participants includes locals Blue Rubies, Rhia Rae, Sc Mira, Until Red, Young Folk, Adam Hanney, Cassidy Mann, Ila Barker, Ryan Van Belleghem, and many more. Several past YPP participants—including 2014 festival performers Cara Luft and Sweet Alibi—have gone on to impressive careers in music. YPP will take over the Shady Grove stage on Friday, July 11 for a full day of performances (schedule below).
To help get you in the Folk Fest spirit, we've got a free tune from one of this year's young performers, Blue Rubies. Fresh from a Manitoba Music Night show last week, the roots trio is a YPP sophomore, hitting Shady Grove at 2 PM. Look for Blue Rubies’ debut EP to be released officially later this summer, and in the meantime, we’ve got a sneak preview with the band's song "By and By".
