The west of Canada is heading to Montreal next month. Nine artists from Manitoba are teaming up with acts from across Western Canada to showcase at Folk Alliance International (FAI) conference. The premier professional development conference focused on folk, roots, multicultural, and world music in North America, the 31st annual event makes a move to Montreal for this year from its usual Kansas City home, February 13-17.

The four-day showcase is the latest in a series of partnered events with Manitoba Music, SaskMusic, Alberta Music, and MusicBC under the BreakOut West banner, with a lineup boasting 30 acts. Artists and their teams will also have a chance to build their business networks and connect with over 2,500 registrants from 20 countries.

The performers from Manitoba making the trip and hitting the BreakOut West showcases include wildcrafted folk act Carly Dow, JUNO-winning guitar virtuoso Joey Landreth, folk group Leaf Rapids, singer/songwriter Madeleine Roger, contemplative folk artist Noah Derksen, acoustic chamber folk act Raine Hamilton, proto-pop avant-folk trio Red Moon Road, singer/songwriter Slow Leaves, and roots powerhouse duo The Small Glories. In the last decade alone, Manitoba artists have earned five JUNO Awards and 20 nominations in the roots and traditional categories, including the recently-announced nod for FAI alums The Wailin’ Jennys and Leonard Sumner, and William Prince's nomination for International Folk Music Awards' artist of the year.

Bringing Manitoba music to new markets and intensifying business activity in existing markets is a key component of Manitoba Music's trade and business development activities. Manitoba Music's market development initiatives are funded by the Province of Manitoba, Manitoba Film & Music, and FACTOR through the financial support of the Government of Canada and Canada's private radio broadcasters.
