The centre of Canada will be well represented at Canada’s largest music festival and industry conference this month. Fourteen Manitoba acts are headed to Toronto for North by Northeast (NXNE), which runs June 11-17 with showcases in 40 different downtown venues.

This year’s roster of showcasing acts from Manitoba features a diverse crop, including many NXNE first-timers, spanning a wide variety of genres from roots to reggae to rock. Music fans and industry insiders can catch sets by indie rock acts This Hisses, Haunter, and The Vibrating Beds, pop/rockers Mise en Scene and Enjoy Your Pumas, acoustic pop singer/songwriter JP Hoe, pop noir Gt. DANE, indie roots acts Ingrid Gatin and Jenny Berkel, folk/rocker trio Feed the Birds, pop/roots act Katie Murphy, cabaret pop outfit The Nonsuch, electronica act Mira Black, Dixieland-tinged roots quintet The F-Holes, and reggae rockers The Noble Thiefs. Winnipeg-based record label and management company Pipe & Hat will be presenting a NXNE showcase on June 15 at The Annex Live. The line-up includes locals Mise en Scene, Ingrid Gatin, The Noble Thiefs, and The Nonsuch, as well as Australia’s Benjalu and Kim Churchill, and The Roseville Band from Wales.

For the 17th year, Manitoba Music and Manitoba Film & Music will team up to co-host a networking event on June 15 atop the Drake Hotel. The event provides Manitobans at NXNE with the opportunity to mix with some of the biggest names in the industry. This exclusive, invite-only party is one of the hottest events of the conference.

Industry events such as NXNE are vital to the market development and career advancement of Manitoba artists and industry professionals. Manitoba Music and Manitoba Film & Music provide financial support and travel assistance through the Market Access Program. The purpose of the jointly-funded program is to support Manitoba artists and music industry professionals in professional development, and in attending and enhancing their presence at professionally organized music industry conferences and showcases.
