Alternative Ambient Instrumental Sound Art

Rob Knaggs

Australia’s Rob Knaggs is a cellist and composer.
Taking inspiration from the fascinating and freezing environment that is alive with wild polar bears, beluga whales, and northern lights, Rob uses his cello and live looping technology to create chilling oceanic soundscapes. Rob’s affinity with the ocean and whales saw him following his dream to play cello among the thousands of chirping beluga whales that reside in the western Hudson Bay. The footage of this performance went viral across social media, demonstrating the desire for humans to interact with animals. This interaction with whales led Rob Knaggs to collaborate with the ocean conservation society, Sea Shepherd, to promote ocean health and the preservation of marine life. Knaggs debut, Up the Middle, is an instrumentally dynamic ode to Churchill, Manitoba. Impressed by the record’s ambition and concept, Travel Manitoba hand selected Rob Knaggs to perform alongside Winnipeg visual artist and polar bear activist, Kal Barteski, to represent Manitoba at tourism galas in New York City, Winnipeg and Calgary.

Audiences across Australia and North America have been captivated by Rob Knaggs’ performance of cinematic soundtrack, post-rock, and ethereal whale song.

"Rob Knaggs will make you feel as though you are gliding through the deep dark ocean alongside the magnificent graceful whales. It's a dream, come share in it.” - Savannah Wild
